The Howard County Public Library has been closed since March 18 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. It is set to reopen next week by appointment only. The library is taking a cautious approach to reopening under Missouri’s phase one of its “Show Me Strong” reopening plan.

“We are putting some things in place for the next phase, always with the aim of keeping our staff and patrons safe,” said librarian Chris Kloeppel.

Patrons may make an appointment to visit the library by calling (660) 248-3348. The library will continue to follow social distance recommendations, which include limiting the number of patrons in the building at one time.

The library will open more fully on Tuesday, May 19. Staff members will wear masks and ask the same for patrons. All returned items will be quarantined and all surfaces will be wiped and sanitized after each patron. Book donations are suspended until further notice.

Computers have been moved to allow additional space in the check out area, but patrons are asked not to linger. Computer use will be limited to 30 minutes.

Hours during the month of May will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday thorugh Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. 

There will be not story time or block days through the month of June, but the library will offer online opportunites with a Virtual Summer Reading Program.
