Malia Carmack couldn’t make a shot wearing her usual number 10 jersey on Friday.
Teammate Brenna Hubbard handled all of the scoring during the first half of the Lady Jackets’ fifth-place game with Fayette, finishing the half with all 11 of Glasgow’s points.
After a little blood from her elbow appeared on her jersey, Carmack made a uniform switch.
Number 30 scored 13 points in the second half of Glasgow’s 40-36 win over Fayette.
Carmack’s steal and score with 55 seconds left gave the Lady Jackets a 38-33 lead, the first time either team led by more than one possession in the final quarter.
Sydney Spielbauer’s steal and Kenzie Felten’s 3-pointer brought Fayette within two, but Glasgow had the answer. Krista Monnig threw a dangerous pass on an inbounds play, but her aim was precise, finding Hubbard on the far side of the basket where she finished yet again.
Hubbard finished the game with 24 points and combined with Carmack for all but three of Glasgow’s total.
While the pair of juniors handled the scoring, the entire team contributed to the win, securing key rebounds and playing intense defense.
While Carmack didn’t score in the first half, coach Molly Monnig credited her passing with setting up Hubbard for success in the paint. Monnig also praised Miranda Cooper for her play on Friday, scrapping for rebounds and loose balls while bringing energy on the defensive end.
Glasgow held Fayette scoreless for over six and a half minutes to open the game before Spielbauer’s 3-pointer cut the 6-0 lead in half.
Glasgow led 8-5 at the beginning of the second quarter, which began with a three-minute scoring drought for both teams, ended by a 3-pointer from Laci Fuhlage.
Spielbauer, Abbey Conrow, and Felten each made a 3-pointer as the Falcons took an eight-point lead with a 14-3 run.
Felten finished with six points and had a great all-around effort according to coach Valerie Foland.
“Offensively she was not timid whatsoever, she shot and went for boards,” Foland said. “She had the most boards she’s had all season and played the best defense she’s played all season as well as scoring. Same with Sydney (Spielbauer) coming off the bench. She came in strong, came in ready to shoot and ready to rebound.”
Hubbard had a 3-point play and Carmack made a 3-pointer during a 12-3 Glasgow run. That put the Lady Jackets up 23-22, setting up the exciting back-and-forth final quarter.
Glasgow evened its record at 8-8 with the win.
Glasgow 48, Pilot Grove 26
The Lady Jackets turned a tight game into a rout, outscoring Pilot Grove 21-2 in the third quarter of a 48-26 win in the consolation semifinal.
Pilot Grove won the second quarter 13-4 to tie the game 17-17 at the half. Malia Carmack left the game about midway through the second quarter with an injury, but returned to score 16 points in the second half. She led Glasgow with 21 for the game.
“She definitely gave us a boost,” Glasgow coach Molly Monnig said.
“She hit some big shots and she did a really good job of moving without the basketball. She found the middle of the floor and she attacked the basket.
“Defensively, our energy in the third quarter was better than it has been probably for most of the season.”
Brenna Hubbard had 10 points and Miranda Cooper scored six. Hadley Sanders finished with five and Emma Massie had four.
