Inspiration and Focus: Falcons storm into District Championship

Posted

On the heels of an inspiring win Thursday evening, the third-seeded Fayette boys held their focus and upset second-seeded South Callaway at Mokane, 72-55, Thursday night in the Class 3 District 7 semifinals. The Falcons now move on to the championship game at top-seeded Monroe City on Saturday.

Fayette leaped ahead 19-12 after the first quarter on 3-point sharpshooting by seniors Kyle Schleeter and Cody Hilgedick, and junior Dalton Collins. But South Callaway turned things around in the second, outscoring Fayette 13-6 to tie the game at 25-25 at halftime.

“We came out very strong in the first quarter and I know South Callaway struggled early with the 3 point shot they are so good at,” said Fayette coach Jon Bishop.

Coming out of the locker room the Falcons hit the ground running as Schleeter hit for 14 of Fayette’s 25 in the third quarter. The Fayette defense held South Callaway to 13 to head into the final frame with a double-digit lead. Not letting up in the fourth quarter it was sophomore Chase Allen’s turn to take over, scoring eight points to help seal the win for the Falcons, 72-55.

Fayette outscored South Callaway 47-30 in the second half.

“I thought we closed out better in the second half and we were able to come out with the win,” Bishop said.

Schleeter led all scorers with 26 including five 3-pointers. He finished with eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Allen came away with a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Hilgedick hit for 14 and pulled down five rebounds. Collins was the fourth Falcon to score in double figures with 12 points and added 12 rebounds for the double-double. Senior Zach Henderson and junior Garren Vroman each added two. Henderson recorded a team-high seven assists.

“Any time you can make 9 three's shooting 39% from the arc and you have two guys get double-doubles you should have a good night on the scoreboard,” Bishop said.

Fayette is now 15-10 heading into the district championship. Monroe City (23-2) easily defeated fourth-seeded Missouri Military Academy on Thursday 65-31. Tipoff Saturday is at 6 p.m.

“Our guys are really locked in and we will need to step it up when we travel to Monroe City Saturday to play the best team we've played all year. We will need tremendous focus,” said Bishop.
