Jameson Island chute project will not resume until agreement is reached

It was about a year ago when excavation work on Jameson Island by the U.S. Corps of Engineers caught the attention of locals and made headlines in media outlets, including the Fayette newspapers.

The issue later died down when the corps voluntarily suspended depositing soil into the river May 17. The threat of a lawsuit from the Clean Water Commission in September extended the corps' suspension of soil deposition through the winter months.

Now that construction season is just around the corner, some have wondered whether excavation work would resume at Jameson Island.

The answer is 'no' for now.

Excavation work on all chute projects along the Missouri River is 'on hold' until the U.S. Corps of Engineers and the state, including the Clean Water Commission, come to an agreement.

Mike George, Missouri River Recovery program manager, told the Democrat-Leader Wednesday that the corps 'has voluntarily stopped all excavation work until the attorneys come to an agreement.'

George felt negotiations were 'close' to completion.
