Rural Fayette resident, Pooch Schaefer, 76, died April 12, 2022. He passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous five-year battle with cancer.

Jerome Edward Schaefer, known to his family and friends as “Pooch,” was born in Chariton County, Missouri on March 19, 1946. He was one of 10 children born to Stephen Hubert and Anna Frances (Niekamp) Schaefer. Pooch grew up in the Aholt bottoms north of Glasgow. He attended and graduated from Glasgow High School with the class of 1964. On November 16, 1968, Pooch married the love of his life, Sheryl “Dale” Shields at St. Mary’s Church in Glasgow. They’ve enjoyed more than 53 years of marriage together. Pooch worked as a farmer most of his life, farming full-time until 1978, when he took a job with American Recreation. He retired from American Rec. in 2001. Pooch loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and he enjoyed gardening and canning produce. He enjoyed time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. Pooch was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife of the home, Sheryl Schaefer; his three children, Greg (Jessica) Schaefer, of Glasgow, Missouri, Marilyn (Brian) Cannon, of Lone Jack, Missouri, and Monica Schaefer, of Fayette, Missouri; six grandchildren, Aidan, Beaty, and Declan Cannon, and Connor, KatiJo, and Christopher Schaefer; two sisters, Mildred Brand of Glasgow, Missouri and Stella Niemier of Belton, Missouri; and a sister-in-law, Nina Bell Schaefer. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Denise Hubbard and Dana Hamilton, both of Fayette, Missouri, Diane Day of Glasgow; and brother-in-law Delano Shields, of Boonville.

In addition to his parents, Pooch was preceded in death by four brothers, Ervin “Bud,” Melvin “Beetle,” Jim, and Steve “Junie” Schaefer; three sisters, Jenny Rose Monnig, Angeline Noth, and Nadine Monnig; and his brother-in-law Daryl (Chop) Shields.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, 2022, at Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Glasgow. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2022, at St. Mary Church in Glasgow, with Fr. Joshua Duncan officiating.
