Jordyn Ball earns 15th win as CMU claims regular season Heart title

Posted

The Central Methodist softball team claimed its second-straight regular-season Heart championship on Saturday. The Lady Eagles split their final doubleheader of the regular season against Benedictine College on Senior Day.

Between games, the program recognized its 2023 senior class, including Katelyn Kiser, Kaylee Parker, Montana Stangel, Rachel Muniz, Caroline Walker, and Chloe Clarke.

Game 1

BC 2

CMU 5

In game one, Benedictine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first frame on a two-run home run. A single from CMU freshman outfielder Kaysie Jolley in the bottom half of the second scored Elizabeth Palumbo to cut the lead in half.

Jolley would follow that up with a three-run home run to right field to put Central out in front 4-2 in the fourth. Senior Katelyn Kiser put the finishing touches on the inning and the game with a solo home run to center.

Palumbo, Montana Stangel, and Jolley all finished the day with two hits, while Jolley drove in four of Central’s five RBI.

Freshman pitcher and Fayette native Jordyn Ball had another solid outing inside the circle, tossing a complete game and giving up just two earned runs on five hits with two walks. She struck out eight batters in her 15th win of the year.

Game 2

BC 11

CMU 3

Game two belonged to the Raven bats. Benedictine plated 11 runs on 14 hits, including four that went for extra bases. Central scored runs in each of the first three innings but was unable to match Benedictine’s offensive power.

Joely Crider and Kiser each tallied two hits, including two doubles for Kiser. Madison White also picked up a solo home run in the third.

Haile Farris, Haley Cotter, and Brooke Tolle all saw action inside the circle for the Eagles. Farris, a junior right-hander, allowed five earned runs on five hits, including two home runs. She walked two but failed to strike out a batter in just two-thirds of an inning. Freshman right-hander Cotter saw the lion’s share of the time in the circle, pitching five-and-a-third innings. She allowed six runs (5 earned) on nine hits. She struck out two without issuing a walk.

Tolle, a right-handed freshman, finished out the final inning of the game with zeros across the board.

CMU, now 34-10 overall and 21-5 in conference play, earned the top seed in the Heart Conference Tournament. The Lady Eagles will open their conference tournament title defense against eighth-seeded Culver-Stockton College at noon Thursday in Baldwin City, Kansas.
