The cost for the city to put on the annual Independence Day fireworks display has gone up. The city council voted last week to pay an additional $700 for the same display as last year.
Record high inflation has driven up the costs of most goods and services, and fireworks are not immune to that effect. For almost three decades the city has hired J&M Displays from Slater to put on the annual display. To continue with the same show again this year, the cost will have to go up.
The charge for last year’s show was $3,500, although donations typically cover most, if not all, of the cost. The same show will now cost $4,200.
J&M offered to provide a smaller show for last year’s price. But the council decided to pay the increase with the hope that donations once again help pay for the show.
To donate toward the fireworks display, contact City Hall in person, or by phone at (660) 248-5246.
