The New Franklin girls brought home the fifth-place trophy from the Sturgeon tournament after a 48-40 win over New Bloomfield on Saturday.

“It was really exciting for us to get three trophies in the three tournaments that we’ve played in,” Kristen Flick said afterwards. “That’s big. Since I’ve been playing we haven’t had that.”

Flick led New Franklin with 16 points. She had six points in the fourth quarter, going 4-6 from the free-throw line over the final minutes as the Lady Bulldogs iced the game.

New Franklin trailed 11-10 after one quarter, but took control in the second quarter, allowing just one field goal and three total points as New Bloomfield went 1-6 from the free-throw line.

Carly Dorson scored four of her six points during the second quarter as the Lady Bulldogs built a 24-14 lead.

“We were really hyped during the whole game,” Flick said. “The communication wasn’t as good as it could have been, but it was high.

“We were ready for it, we had a good mentality going in, we were all there working. We wanted it.”

Abby Maupin was 4-4 from the free-throw line and finished with nine points. Addy Salmon had six points at the line. Campbell Cooper scored all five of her points in the third quarter and Madelyn Chaney added four.

New Franklin 53, Westran 34

Abby Maupin scored a game-high 19 points as New Franklin beat Westran 53-34 in a consolation semifinal on Wednesday.

The Lady Bulldog defense allowed just two made field goals in each of the first two quarters, building a 26-13 lead by halftime. Madelyn Chaney made a pair of 3-pointers in the first half and was 6-6 at the line to finish with 14 points.

“Win number eight feels good,” New Franklin coach Morgan Vetter said after her team improved to 8-8 on Wednesday. “This group is improving. I’m ready to continue to battle with this group. They have the drive to do well.”

Addy Salmon scored all six of her points in the first half. Campbell Cooper made two 3-pointers in the third quarter to finish with six.

Maupin scored eight of her points in the fourth quarter as New Franklin closed out the win.

Paris 53, New Franklin 41

After a strong first quarter, New Franklin struggled in a 53-41 loss to Paris in the first round of the Sturgeon tournament on Monday.

Abby Maupin scored 10 of her 18 points in the first quarter as the Lady Bulldogs took an 18-15 lead.

New Franklin made just two field goals over the next two quarters and had no answer for the Coyotes’ 6-foot, 6-inch post Tori Hamilton, who scored 22 points in the first half and finished with 33. Hamilton will play Division I basketball at SIU Edwardsville next year.
