Lady Jackets look to veterans to lead 2021 softball campaign

The 2020 Glasgow Lady Jacket softball team finished last season with a record of 5-8. Struggling defensively throughout the season, they also had games where they played very well, both offensively and defensively. In her third year with the team, coach Allison Foster is looking to recuperate from the loss of 2020 seniors Miranda Cooper, Emma Massie, Brooke Hammons, and Hadley Sanders.

Returning this year as seniors will be Keyanna Colvin, Jillian Johanning, and Malia Carmack. “Those three showed a lot of leadership qualities in games played this summer, so I look for leadership from them during this season as well,” said Foster.

The lion’s share of the pitching duties this season will fall to Keyanna Colvin.  Backing her up during the year will be junior Maddie Foster and sophomore Kaylyn Campbell.

“Our lineup will differ every game we play,” said Foster.  “But we will start out  with Layne Sanders catching.”  In addition, Campbell and  Maddie Foster will each play infield spots while junior Allie Mathews will hold an outfield spot.

Senior Malia Carmack, junior Olivia Fuemmeler, junior Karlie Monnig, and Jillian Johanning will alternate between infield and outfield spots.

“Our defense has improved,” said Foster. “We really started to click in the last few games we played this summer. The girls all stepped up at whatever position they were asked to play and did their job to get us outs.”

Both Sanders at catcher and Colvin at pitcher are returning All-Conference players while Carmack made All-District. “I expect them all to continue hitting the ball and fielding the ball well,” said Foster.

Kaylyn Campbell was injured during most of the season last year. Foster said she expects her to be able to play all season which will add another big bat to the Glasgow lineup.

While in her third year as a coach, Foster will be in only her second year as head coach. She will be assisted by Sam Strodtman who will be assisting for the second year with the Lady Jackets.

The Lady Jackets will not participate in a jamboree this season but will open the season at home against Community on Monday, August 30, followed by Hale with Bosworth traveling to Glasgow on September 2. After that, the Lady Jackets will hit the road, first heading to Higbee to take on the Tigers on September 3. Five days later they travel to Harrisburg where they will clash with the Lady Bulldogs on September 8. The next day their destination will be Pilot Grove followed by the third day in a row of traveling when they go to Salisbury on September 10. After playing four games in a row on the road, the Lady Jackets return home to host Madison on September 14 only to head out on the road to Cairo on September 16 to take on Northeast.

September 18 shows Glasgow taking part in the Fayette Softball Tournament followed by another home game against New Franklin on September 21.

As the season starts to wind down, The Lady Jackets will travel to Brunswick to take on the combination team of Brunswick with Keytesville and Northwestern on September 28 before wrapping up the regular season on October 12 with Fayette visiting Glasgow.

“I am predicting a good season for the Lady Jackets,” said Foster. “ Last season, we shot for a .500 record and fell just short. I’m hoping for an above .500 record this year from this group of ladies.”
