The Fayette and Harrisburg boys teams faced off for the second time in two weeks during the Harrisburg Tournament on Tuesday, Jan. 26. In the first game, Fayette finished ahead by nine. But it was the Bulldogs who escaped with the upper hand the second go-around, winning in close fashion 64-61.
Harrisburg was coming off a tough 30-point loss at the hands of second-seeded Hallsville the night before.
“We played a hungry and tough team in Harrisburg tonight,” said Fayette coach Jon Bishop. “They played very motivated after a loss to us at the beginning of the month.”
Fayette, seeded fifth, trailed by two after eight minutes, but outscored the Bulldogs 17-13 in the second quarter to enter halftime up 34-32. Bishop said his team played solid defense early. “I thought our three-quarter-court press was a big difference in the second quarter. We slowed Harrisburg down and caused them to force some shots.”
The Falcons turned up the defensive intensity in the second half, but Harrisburg was still able to creep back and cut the lead to one point after three quarters. “None of our guys were in foul trouble at halftime and we wanted to play a little aggressive in the third quarter,” Bishop said. “I know we could have changed some things earlier in the (fourth quarter), on defense and I know that’s on me.”
Aggressive defense often means putting the opposing team at the free-throw line. The Bulldogs hit key free throws down the stretch, capped by a basket-and-one by senior Tanner Lanes to take the lead 58-55 and finish with the win.
“After that, we never trailed,” said Harrisburg coach Kyle Fisher. “It was back and forth the whole game. Both teams had trouble stopping the other.”
Fayette had the chance to tie at the end, but the 3-point attempt missed.
Senior Kyle Schleeter led the Falcons with 26 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field. He made four of eight 3-point shots and sank 10 of 11 free-throw attempts.
Senior Cody Hilgedick finished the night with 15 points, three assists, and five steals. Sophomore Chase Allen finished big with a double-double. He scored 10 points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. He also made two assists, two steals, and blocked one shot.
Lanes paced Harrisburg with 25 points and seven rebounds on the night. Sophomore Brayden Ott added 11 points and sank three 3-pointers. Junior Jace Carr had 10 points, along with six rebounds and four assists. Junior Brayton Stephenson was one point away from a double-double with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
