Last Call for CERT Training

Fayette police remind area residents that time is running short for those wishing to sign up to be trained as a volunteer emergency responder.

Those who take the training become part of CERT ' Community Emergency Response Team.

Anyone wishing to be certified must attend each of three training sessions which will be conducted at Fayette Fire Station #1 on West Morrison. There is no charge.

The first session begins at 6 p.m. this Friday, with the second class beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday and the final session beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 24.

CERT volunteers can provide an effective first-response capability. Acting first as individuals, then as a team, trained individuals will fan-out within a particular area extinguishing fires, turning off natural gas inlets to damaged homes, performing light search and rescue operations, and rendering basic first aid.

Trained volunteers also may offer important services in non-hazardous situations such as shelter support, crowd control and evacuation.

A CERT team will be used in those incidents where police and fire resources are overwhelmed.
Participants will be trained in basic self-help and mutual-aid emergency functions such as: emergency preparedness, fire suppression, utility control, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, team organization, and terrorism.

To register or for more information, contact Chief Bryan Kunze or Cpl. Angie Malone at 248-2241.

The training is being sponsored by the police department and Howard County Emergency Management.
