To the Editor:

The tragic death of David Moore inspired me to write what has been on my mind all summer.

Since I live in the country and do not want to walk along the highway, I come into town to walk. Fayette is great for walking. Or would be, if the sidewalks were walkable. South Main, parts of W. Church, Davis between Church and Cleveland…there are other streets with disastrous sidewalks but these are the ones I know best.

What passes for sidewalks here is uneven, broken concrete, grass growing through the concrete, often with bushes and tree branches overhanging the sidewalk. The result? It is easier, but not safer, to walk in the street.

Who is responsible for the sidewalks? I’m told it is the owner of the houses, but who makes sure the owner keeps up with their maintenance? Is there a city code about this? If not, there should be, because it’s apparent the owners are not doing it on their own.

Sincerely,

Ruth Lane
