Library Mulls Summer Plans

Summer activities at the Howard County Public Library will include a weekly story hour. Starting in June, a lapsitter-kindergarten session will begin, followed in July by an older kindergarten through age 10 years hour.

This year's theme: 'Discover New Trails At Your Library.' Expect more details including time and day in an ad in this newspaper in May and early June. In the meantime, the librarian will coordinate the programs with volunteer teachers who help during the summer. Flyers will be mailed to area baby sitters to keep them abreast of developments.

Still to be decided is what events can be worked out for the New Franklin and Armstrong offices.

In anticipation of the future Interlibrary Loan Program, several aspects of library policy were discussed at the board meeting April 14. It was decided to make available for loan all printed material except that held for reference. Audio and video materials will not be made available for interlibrary lending. In addition, any non-fiction items that would be hard to replace will be placed in the reference collection.

Materials will be loaned for a three week period with no renewals allowed. Howard County patrons requesting loans should be 18 years of age or older, unless parent's permission is given. Patrons will be asked to pay the cost of postage to return materials prior to book
checkout.

The Interlibrary Loan Program will essentially make available the resources of every participating library in Missouri.

The board continued discussions on renovations for the checkout desk and reading areas, with further discussion expected at the May meeting.

The next scheduled library board meeting is May 12 at 4:30 p.m. in the library. The public is invited to attend and participate.
