Fayette suffered only its second loss of the season, falling 5-0 at conference rival  Marceline on Thursday, October 7. Fayette entered the contest riding a 19-game winning streak with the conference title on the line.

The 21-3-1 Lady Tigers were able to accomplish what only one other team had done all season, defeat the Lady Falcons. With the 5-0 victory, the Lady Tigers extended their own winning streak to 10 games.

The Lady Falcons were only able to scratch out two hits on the day as both Preslee and Skylar Sunderland singled.

In the circle, senior ace Jordyn Ball gave up four hits and walked one, while striking out six in six innings.

Two days prior the Lady Falcons extended their win streak to 19 with a nine-inning victory over L&C foe Salisbury, 6-4.

Fayette jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first after leadoff hitter Addison Newell singled. Addison Powell ran for Newell as a courtesy runner then scored when junior shortstop Preslee Sunderland tripled to right. Classmate Megan Lewis then doubled to drive in Sunderland. A groundout and two strikeouts stranded Lewis to end the inning.

The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth when Preslee Sunderland singled then moved to second on a Lewis single. Following a strikeout, Sunderland stole third and scored on a throwing error by the Salisbury catcher, making the score 3-0 in favor of the Falcons. The error also allowed Lewis to advance to second, only to be stranded once again.

In the bottom of the fifth, Salisbury made it a one-run game when they were able to score two runs on a walk followed by three singles.

Going into the top of the seventh, Fayette needed only to register three outs to record the win. But after a Fayette error and a double by Salisbury, the Panthers were able to tie the game at three apiece with a sacrifice fly.

Neither team was able to score in the eighth, but in the top of the ninth with one out, Addison Newell walked and went to second on Preslee Sunderland’s fifth hit of the day. With runners at first and second, Megan Lewis strolled to the plate and promptly deposited the second pitch over the left-field fence to give Fayette the 6-3 lead.

Going into the bottom of the inning, with a three-run lead Fayette again, needed only three outs to finish the game, but Salisbury had other ideas. After an error put the leadoff batter on, the next batter doubled to bring the Lady Panthers within two. Finally, after a walk, a popout, and two strikeouts, the Lady Falcons were able to call it a night.

Preslee Sunderland went 5-5 on the evening with a triple and three runs scored while Megan Lewis was 3-5 with a home run, a double, and four RBI’s. Addison Newell and Hannah Quint each singled.

Jordyn Ball went the full nine, striking out 12 and giving up only one earned run.

With both starts last week, Ball raised her total innings pitched on the year to 124.2. On the season she has struck out 224 of the 478 batters faced and walked only 34 while giving up a mere 55 hits.

Next up for the Lady Falcons is the Class 2 District 3 tournament in Harrisburg. While the tournament began on Tuesday after The Advertiser went to press, top-seeded Fayette does not play until today at 5 p.m. The Lady Falcons will take on the winner of Tuesday’s matchup between Salisbury and South Callaway. The championship game will be played on Thursday at 6 p.m.
