As the 2010-11 school year gets underway, Masonic Cooper Lodge #36 is again gearing up for its third “Bikes for Books” program. The event was first organized in 2008 by Roy Cary of Cooper Lodge in Boonville with the help of other Masonic members and included elementary and middle schools in both Howard and Cooper Counties.
During the 2010 spring semester, Cooper Lodge #36 had nine participating schools in the two counties. They included New Franklin Elementary, Fayette Daly Elementary, Glasgow Elementary, St. Mary’s Catholic School in Glasgow and schools in Boonville and Blackwater.
Participating schools set their own program for how students would participate in the reading program and determined how the drawing for the bikes will occur.
Individuals and businesses sponsor bikes for the reading project including Steve and Joyce Gilson, Robert and Dorsey Alpers, Tom Adair Construction, Hope Photo, Jeff Davis Community Auto Sales, Dave’s Country Market, Glasgow Equipment - Bill Hord, Citizens Community Bank, Wesley and Susan Williams, Nordyne Inc., Achievia Tutoring, Greis Trucking & Excavation, Jennings Premium Meats, Exchange Bank of Missouri, Terry Davis, Central Missouri Glass & More, Carrie Lyn’s Ice Cream Parlor and Cooper Lodge #36.
“Bikes for Books” committee members are co-chairs John Holtzclaw and Roy Cary, Tom Miller, Gary Whitehurse, Daniel Cary, Jim Painter, Ted Litton and Todd Hill.
In May of 2010 David Barton Elementary reported 28,000 books were read by students. Glasgow had a total of 32,400 pages read by their participating students while Fayette Daly Elementary students reported 10,863 minutes of reading.
Officials of Cooper Lodge #36 noted appreciation for the efforts of school administrators, teachers and staff who are involved in “Bikes for Books” and the generosity of individuals and businesses who have sponsored bikes for the program.
This year 40 bikes will be given during each semester.
The Masonic “Bikes for Books” program also included sponsorship by the Bunceton Wallace Lodge #456.
