The Fayette R-III Board of Education has selected Jane Weiland as the school district’s Distinguished Citizen of the Year for 2020.
Weiland, well known throughout Fayette, has been a longtime substitute teacher and volunteer in the Fayette school district. Lovingly called “Miss Jane” by students and faculty, she is a role model for everyone in the district.
“Her excitement for learning is contagious and her energy is boundless,” said Fayette Superintendent Jill Wiseman. “Through her compassionate and kind leadership, her students learn to love school and to love learning. The children look forward to the days when Miss Jane helps with or subs in their classrooms. They are thrilled to see her both in and outside of school and she always has time for a hug, cheerful greeting or even a word of encouragement when needed.”
A natural-born storyteller, Miss Jane shares stories which are based on personal experience and others which are passed down to her by family and other teachers. She is a frequent contributor of travel stories to the Fayette Advertiser and Missouri Life Magazine, and in 2010 published the book, “The Three Gallant Girls of the Boonslick”.
One former member of the Fayette faculty called Weiland a true gem.
“It is difficult to measure the difference her presence has made but it is certain that her students, faculty members and members of the community at large are better for knowing her, a truly distinguished citizen,” added Wiseman.
The Fayette school board annually selects the award honorees. Previous winners are Gary Linhart (2019), Kelly Elliott (2018), Evan Melkershman (2017), and Bob and Dee Cramer (2016).
