MPA presents Bowl of Hygeia award to pharmacist Salim “Sam” Tadrus of Sam’s Health Mart in Fayette and Moberly

The Missouri Pharmacy Association (MPA) celebrated the outstanding efforts of individuals in the pharmacy profession during the 2021 Joint MPA & IPhA Annual Conference and Trade Show.

A total of nine individuals were presented with 2021 awards.

The excellence awards were given in seven different categories: Pharmacist Making a Difference, Technician of the Year, Distinguished Young Pharmacist, Excellence in Innovation, Faculty Member of the Year [St. Louis College of Pharmacy at University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis); University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC)], Student of the Year, and the Bowl of Hygeia Award.

The 2021 Bowl of Hygeia Award was presented to Salim “Sam” Tadrus. This prestigious award is presented annually to a pharmacist who demonstrates an outstanding record of community service in the pharmacy profession.

Tadrus graduated from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1963.  In 2006, he received the Distinguished Alumnus for Service to the College award from the Alumni Association and in 2013, the Distinguished Service Award from the Mortar and Pestle Society.

One of his favorite ways to support the students today is to contribute to the “White Coat” ceremony each year.

While building his business, which includes 3 pharmacies, Sam was active in several civic organizations and church in his community.   He also served on the Board of the Moberly Area Community College, as President of the Moberly Public School Board, and was appointed to the Tax Increment Financing Committee, which secured the commitment for a Wal-Mart distribution plant in Moberly.

His donation of a building in downtown Moberly allowed the Area Chamber of Commerce to establish a visible presence in the community. He recently was able to raise over $30,000 to pay a share of building a sidewalk for the safety of students walking to and from several schools in the area.

Sam is currently serving on the Moberly Planning and Zoning Commission, and on the Board of the Randolph County Health Department. He continues his work in the pharmacy profession by acting as the nursing home consultant for his business.

Sam has always been a person who will do anything to help out someone in need.  Throughout his career, he has paid for, or waived, costs of medications for those in need within the community.  He has worked constantly to establish personal relationships with local nurses and physicians, because he felt that was the best way to ensure everybody helping the patient was on the same page.

Even today, at age 81, he remains credentialed to administer vaccines and engage in MTS protocols while providing backup coverage for his pharmacists.

He has also been instrumental in encouraging many high school students to attend pharmacy school.

The MPA, established in 1879, promotes and protects the role of pharmacists as the medication experts in patient care relationships, and as an integral part of the health care team. MPA is the “unified voice for Missouri Pharmacists.” More information can be found on their website:  www.MORx.com.
