MSHSAA cancels remaining post-season events

Posted

On Friday, the lights of athletic fields around the area came on for 20 minutes and 20 seconds at 8:20 p.m. to honor the graduating class of 2020. It happened in Fayette as it happened in Missouri and around the country.

It gave the cars passing by a chance to reflect on the accomplishments of the soon-to-be graduates. It was also a time to accept the unfortunate reality that COVID-19 had robbed them of a normal graduation, a last band performance, and a last day of school.

Over the last few weeks they wondered if they would ever take the diamond, track, or the golf course in their school colors again.

Now it was final.

Earlier on Friday, Governor Mike Parson announced that school buildings would remain closed to students for the rest of the school year. The Missouri State High School Activities Association already stated in an earlier release that no teams could practice or play games as long as schools were not in session. The MSHSAA confirmed later on Friday that the Governor’s announcement led the association to cancel all post-season events for the remainder of the school year.

“This decision is very difficult for all involved especially given the impact it will have on our students, parents, coaches, teachers, and administrators throughout the state,” said MSHSAA Executive Director Dr. Kerwin Urhahn.

“We thank all of the participants, the coaches/directors/advisors, the administrations, the parents, and everyone else who has dedicated tremendous amounts of time, passion, and effort to these events.”

The impact of the spring season cancellation was especially difficult for the seniors, who had put in work and practice hours for a final season that would never be.

“To our senior participants- we thank you for everything you have done for your schools and communities and wish you the very best in your bright futures,” Urhahn said. “While this is a difficult ending, the lessons you’ve learned and friendships you’ve made through high school activities will last your lifetime.”

“The MSHSAA office thanks everyone involved for their patience and understanding throughout this process,” Urhahn said.
