Entering the game against Madison with a 4-2 record, the New Franklin Bulldogs may have suspected they were going to have an easy win. But even with Madison sporting an 0-6 record it is unlikely the Bulldogs expected the 64-23 beating they handed to Madison.
Jumping out to a 15-6 lead, the Bulldogs kept the pedal down as by outscoring the Panthers 19-4 in the second quarter to lead by 24 at the half.
Substituting freely in the third quarter, New Franklin head coach Ross Dobson was able to utilize most of his bench to gain some much-desired playing time. Even so, the Bulldogs outscored Madison 21-9 in the third stanza and 9-4 in the fourth quarter before finishing the game with a 64-23 victory.
“I thought this group did a great job on the defensive end,” said coach Dobson. “This was a great effort by everyone on the team and the offensive transition was really good.”
Senior Tre Cowans put 19 points on the board for the Bulldogs to lead both teams in scoring. Junior Clayton Wilmsmeyer added 13 while sophomore Drake Clark poured in 10. Sophomore Tanner Bishop added six to go along with classmate Connor Wilmsmeyer’s four. Senior Caleb Hull and freshman Rylan Hundley each contributed three. Senior Brett Boggs, junior Matthew Overall, and sophomore Owen Curry each added two.
With the win, New Franklin takes it’s record to 5-2 on the year.
The Bulldogs traveled to Slater Tuesday evening to take on the Wildcats after The Advertiser went to press and will take on Tuscumbia in a road game Thursday night at 6 p.m. That will wrap up the 2021 section of this season. The Bulldogs will see their first action of 2022 when they host the New Franklin tournament January 3-8.
