The New Franklin boys battled until the very end with a dramatic rally to take down area powerhouse Salisbury in double overtime at home Tuesday, 89-81.
Tied 62-62 after one overtime, New Franklin outscored the Panthers 27-19 in the final overtime period to escape with the victory.
“This game was one for the ages,” said New Franklin coach Jim Schlotzhauer. “Both sides left everything on the floor, but we did enough to come out on top. I’m not sure how many ties and lead changes there were, but they were numerous. Hats off to both groups of kids tonight for the amount of fight they showed.”
Five New Franklin players finished in double figures. Junior Drake Clark and senior Clayton Wilmsmeyer each paced the Bulldogs with 20, followed by senior Owen Armentrout with 18, juniors Connor Wilmsmeyer with 14 and Tanner Bishop with 12.
Salisbury junior Cooper Francis led all players with 36 points on the night, followed by senior Ethan Hamilton with 14.
Tuesday’s win was an early test for New Franklin against a Class 2 team that finished 20-3 overall last season with a district title.
“The boys really showed that they can compete with whoever we are on the floor with tonight,” Schlotzhauer said. “Salisbury is a talented team who really beat us up inside in the half-court. We were able to cause a lot of turnovers on the perimeter that kept us in the game. We had a lot of boys step up and make plays tonight. I couldn't be happier with this win heading into the Glasgow Tournament.”
New Franklin is now 2-0 heading into next week’s historic Glasgow Tournament. Seeded fourth, the Bulldogs take on host team Glasgow, the fifth seed, in the nightcap on Monday. The winner will advance to the championship bracket to face either first-seeded Westran or bottom-seeded La Plata on Wednesday.
