The New Franklin Bulldogs took their 10-4 record into Pilot Grove last Tuesday, hoping to add another notch the win column against the 4-9 Tigers. The confines of Pilot Grove High School were not so friendly as the Bulldogs were sent home with a 58-52 loss.
Pilot Grove jumped ahead early, leading 13-9 at the end of the first quarter and never trailed again. Heading into the locker room at the half, the Bulldogs trailed 21-19.
Just one period later, the Tigers led 37-34 with the Bulldogs hanging tough going into the fourth period.
Pilot Grove scored 21 points while New Franklin could only muster 18 in the final eight minutes to make the final score 58-52 in favor of Pilot Grove.
“We have to tip our cap to the Pilot Grove Tigers,” said Bulldog head coach Ross Dobson. “They played well and executed down the stretch.”
Junior Clayton Wilmsmeyer paced the Bulldogs with 21 points on the evening while classmate Owen Armentrout put in eight.
Sophomores Drake Clark and and Owen Curry each added six points. Senior Caleb Hull scored three. Senior Brett Boggs and sophomore Connor Wilmsmeyer each added two.
“We missed a lot of opportunities in the first quarter where we had 18 straight missed opportunities,” said Dobson. “We had a lot of good shots that we just missed. We are off until next Tuesday, that gives us some time to get over sickness and hopefully get everybody back.”
Seeded third, New Franklin was set to tip off against sixth-seeded Community (6-9) on Tuesday in the Sturgeon Tournament after The Advertiser went to press. That game marked the third time the two teams have clashed this month with New Franklin winning on January 4, 66-39, and on January 14, 58-54.
The winner will play Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the high school. The loser will play Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the middle school.
