New Franklin clinches conference title with shutout of Pilot Grove

The New Franklin Bulldogs clinched an outright CAC fall baseball championship with a 3-0 win over Pilot Grove on Friday night.

Tanner Bishop drove in the first run of the game in the fifth inning and Caleb Hull threw a three-hit shutout to give the Bulldogs the win.

“It was a special night,” coach Erich Gerding said. “I couldn’t be more happy for these young men.”

The game was still scoreless in the fifth inning when Bulldog leadoff hitter Owen Armentrout was hit by a pitch. Tysen Dowell hit an infield single and Bishop drove the ball into left field to break the tie.

In the sixth inning, it was Dowell with the big hit. His bases-loaded single drove in two runs, which turned out to be more than enough with Hull on the mound.

The Bulldogs had no runners on with two outs in the sixth, but Clayton Wilmsmeyer, Jake Marshall and Connor Wilmsmeyer drew walks to keep the inning going for Dowell.

“I thought the key to the game for us offensively was our ability to sustain at bats, keep innings alive, and eventually find a way to get guys in, which Tanner did in the fifth and Tysen did in the sixth,” Gerding said. “We just collectively found a way.”

Dowell was 2-3 with a walk and two RBI. Bishop finished 2-4. Jake Marshall was 1-2 with a walk and Keaton Eads was 1-3.

Hull gave up no runs on three hits and three walks over seven innings, while striking out six.

“Caleb gave us an immaculate effort tonight and we played some great defense behind him,” Gerding said.

New Franklin has a record of 6-4 after the win.

A 7-6 loss to Pilot Grove dropped New Franklin to 1-3 back on September 4. Since then, the Bulldogs have won five of six games, including a 4-2 win over Cairo.
