With four fifth-place finishes, three sixth-place finishes, and a seventh-place finish, the New Franklin Bulldog and Lady Bulldog track teams fell just out of contention for the state meet.
Sophomore Drake Clark took two fifth-place finishes. He ran the 100-meter dash in 11.89 and the 200-meter dash in 23.92.
Sophomore Jacob Marshall was the other qualifier on the boys’ side for New Franklin, finishing fifth in the high jump at 1.74 meters. That height tied him with Higbee’s Jordan Fuemmeler, but fourth place was awarded to Fuemmeler who had fewer misses.
Marshall finished sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.67 and finished seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.76.
On the girls’ side, junior Emma Rice finished sixth in the long jump with a distance of 4.55 meters.
Classmate Kelsi Fair wound up sixth in the shot put with a toss of 9.68 meters.
The Lady Bulldogs’ 4x100-meter relay team finished in sixth place, two seconds behind the winner, Silex, with a time of 55.29, setting a new season-best time. That team consisted of senior Abby Maupin, junior Carly Dorson, senior Dakota Clark, and junior anchor Faith Painter.
“It was definitely a day of near misses for us,” said New Franklin coach Adam Quest. “They were, oh, so close to making it to state, but unfortunately, we couldn’t quite get over the hump and qualify anyone. Despite this, our athletes have nothing to hang theirs about. It was a tough sectional.”
