The New Franklin Lady Bulldogs won a tight thriller over Class 2 Salisbury, 51-49, in their home opener Tuesday to move to 2-0 on the season.

Senior Carly Dorson led six New Franklin scorers with a game-high 17 points. Freshman Lilly Chitwood showed once again she is ready for prime time with 13 points. Sophomore Brynn Belstle knocked down a pair of 3-pointers on her way to 10 points on the night.

Senior Kelsi Fair finished with six points for the Lady Bulldogs, followed by senior Emma Rice with four and sophomore Brooklynn Brown with one.

New Franklin took an early lead 16-12 lead after one quarter and led 26-21 at halftime. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 38-30 with one quarter left to play.

New Franklin nearly gave the game away in the fourth quarter as the outcome came down to free throws. Salisbury made five of nine from the charity stripe, but New Franklin balked, sinking only one of six free throws in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs made just seven of 19 chances all game compared to 15-for-24 free-throw shooting for Salisbury.

Sophomores Julia Sloan and Camri Wekenborg paced Salisbury with 13 points each, followed by sophomore Tori Ricketts with 12. Eight of Sloan’s points came from 8-for-10 free-throw shooting.

“We’re 2-0, and it feels so good,” said New Franklin coach Morgan Grosse. “A great win for our program and a way to start the season.”

New Franklin returns to the court as the second seed in next week’s Glasgow Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs face seventh-seeded Westran at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The winner moves on to play at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in the championship bracket against either third-seeded Westran or sixth-seeded Glasgow.

“We will enjoy this break and hop back into the Glasgow tournament when we return,” Grosse said. “Proud is an understatement.”
