The New Franklin Lady Bulldogs moved their record to 10-8 Tuesday night with a convincing 52-40 win in Jamestown. With a winter storm threatening, the game had been moved up to a 5 p.m. start in hopes of being able to play before the weather hit.
The New Franklin bench bore a slight resemblance to a MASH unit with crutches, protective pads, bandages, and tape in abundance. The most evident injury was to senior Abby Maupin who sat out her second game after suffering a bone bruise to the kneecap in a game against Community. Maupin hopes to be reevaluated on Friday and released to practice and play, and she is more than anxious to get back on the court. “I’m only 10 points away,” Maupin said. Those 10 points are all that separates her from joining the elite 1,000-point club.
Having to make adjustments with her senior leader being out, head coach Morgan Vetter made the best of the situation Tuesday with a lineup that saw seven of her 10 players who saw minutes contributing points.
New Franklin jumped out to a slim 9-7 lead at the end of the first quarter with junior Addy Salmon providing four of the nine points.
The two teams warmed up a bit in the second quarter with both teams scoring in double figures for the period. Junior Carly Ellis pumped in eight of the 15 points to help the Lady Bulldogs to a 24-20 halftime lead.
After the break, New Franklin came alive to take a 10-point lead, outscoring Jamestown 14-8 in the stanza to make the score 38-28. Junior Kelsi Fair joined Dorson in providing the scoring punch with both players dropping in five.
The Lady Eagles did not roll over and die at that point and stayed with New Franklin in the fourth, scoring 12 points to New Franklin’s 14. Freshman Kebrea Fair came off the bench to score five points. Jamestown’s 12 were not enough to make a dent in the New Franklin lead as New Franklin notched the 52-40 win.
“I’m proud of the girls for hitting double digits in wins,” said Vetter. “They worked hard. Now we have many big games ahead for the rest of the month.”
Dorson again led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points on the night followed by Kelsi Fair and senior Kristen Flick with 10 each. Kebrea Fair finished the night with eight points while Salmon put in six. Freshmen Tatum Hoover and Brynn Belstle each finished with two points.
The Lady Bulldogs were set to take on Northeast Wednesday night but the game was canceled due to inclement weather. Currently, the next action for the Lady Bulldogs is scheduled for Friday night as New Franklin hosts Brunswick at 6 p.m.
