New Franklin loses tough one to Moberly

Posted

Due to the inclement weather, coach Erich Gerding’s New Franklin Bulldogs have only been able to play four games this spring. The Bulldogs took a 2-1 record into Moberly last Tuesday and came away with a 2-0 loss.

“It was a game of could haves for us,” said Gerding. “The middle of our order just could not get anything done.”

The loss certainly could not be blamed on the pitching staff. Junior Clayton Wilmsmeyer went 5.1 innings giving up only three hits and two runs. Neither of those runs was earned.  Wilmsmeyer struck out six  while facing 22 batters. Sophomore Jacob Marshall came on in relief in the final inning and struck out the only two batters he faced on nine pitches. “I was really proud of our pitching the entire night and the way we generally hung in there after a tough bottom of the first,” said Gerding. “Clayton really battled, and Jake came in and did a great job.”

New Franklin outhit the Spartans 6-3, but could not string together enough hits to put any runs on the board. “Last night (in a 12-2 win over Fayette), we got some two out RBI’s. Tonight, not so much,” said Gerding.

With Moberly jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, it was an uphill battle all night for the visiting Bulldogs. To their credit they did not roll over and play dead. Marshall went two-for-three on the night as did Wilmsmeyer. One of Wilmsmeyer’s hit was a double.

Senior first baseman Sam Marshall contributed as hit as did classmate Zachary Vollrath-Roth.

The Bulldogs left six men on base.

The next action for the Bulldogs will be on April 1 as they travel to take on Prairie Home-Bunceton at 6 p.m.
