New Franklin school district postpones graduation

Posted

The April New Franklin School Board meeting was held via Zoom video chat April 15 at 6 p.m. This novel coronavirus has made decisions regarding school and rescheduling uncertain at best. All EOCs (End Of Course exams) have been waived and school has been called off for the rest of the year.

Since there is a 10-person limit, hosting graduation will be very difficult. The Board is trying to postpone it until the virus is less dangerous and the stay-at-home order is revoked.

In a recent letter students and families, New Franklin Superintendent Brian Cordel announced that the May 10 graduation has been canceled. “We will work towards our tentative date of June 20th at 2:00 p.m.,” he wrote. “Again, this date may change pending our current pandemic issues.”

The Board is still discussing different options for grading schoolwork. Members considered a pass/fail method. This method means that scores are based on third-quarter grades and all homework sent out now is either passed or failed. So, all students need to complete and turn in their work. There are other options that they will discuss at the next board meeting.

Summer school may possibly be held later in the summer, but it all depends on the safety of students.

The school is continuing to pay the kitchen staff during this period. Dawn Shipp, among others, has been continuing making Buddy Packs weekly. Buddy Packs are bags full of food, drinks, and snacks to provide weekend meals for some students in the community. These packs may be picked up every Friday from 3 to 5 p.m.

There were no policy updates for this meeting. The issue of which insurance the staff wants was voted. Out of more than 40 staff members, only nine responded. Six of those nine voted for EBA and three for MUHP. The Board decided to choose EBA as the insurance to go with.

The New Franklin school board meets regularly on the second Monday of each month. Meetings are open and the public is invited. With the COVID-19 regulations in place, meetings are held via the online conferencing app, Zoom. Links to join the meeting are posted on the district’s website prior to meetings.
