The New Franklin Lady Bulldogs wrapped up their 2021 softball season Thursday with a 14-13 defeat at the hands of the Western Lady Hornets. The loss evened their season mark at 11-11. The Lady Bulldogs will next head to the Class 1 District 6 tournament today in Glasgow. Postseason action opens with a 5 p.m .tilt pitting Glasgow against Slater. As the No. 1 seed, New Franklin will take on the winner of that game at 5 p.m. on Thursday. The championship game will be played Friday at 5 p.m.
Last week’s loss came with freshman Brynn Belstle in the circle. Belstle went 6.1 innings and struck out 15 as she faced 41 batters.
“It was a tough loss,” said coach Ross Dowell. “We started really well and jumped out to a 9-1 lead.”
That lead quickly diminished in the fifth inning as Westran scored six runs, followed by two more in the sixth to make the score 11-9 in favor of the Lady Hornets. The Lady Bulldogs answered in the top of the seventh but were unable to hold Westran in the bottom of the inning as the Lady Hornets scored three more runs to take the game.
“We kind of let up in our concentration,” said Dowell. “We got down but showed a lot of heart and retook the lead in the seventh. In the end, we just didn’t make the plays to win. Our offense was good, but defensively we need to clean things up.”
Belstle helped herself at the plate by hitting a home run and driving in four of New Franklin’s runs.
Sophomore Sophia Held was 1-3 on the day with a double while junior Addy Salmon was 1-4 with two runs scored. Junior Jayna Matthews was 1-1 while drawing four walks. Junior Heaven-lee Hundley was 1-2 with two RBI’s while freshman Emersen Eads finished the day 1-3.
