New Year’s ice storm causes power interruptions

Posted

Many residents in Fayette and Howard County were without power for all or portions of New Year’s Day after an early morning ice storm turned the area into a picturesque winter wonderland.

Although a pretty sight, the ice caused power lines and tree limbs to sag, which in turn led to a slew of power outages in the area. City workers were out early New Year’s Day and long into the night repairing transformers and sawing frozen tree limbs.

At least two areas in Fayette were affected. The first required crews to replace a transformer on South Main Street. Another incident occurred on North Church Street when tree limbs caused an outage in the city’s northwest section until well after midnight.

Howard Electric Cooperative in Fayette, which serves around 3,600 customers in Howard, Randolph, Chariton, and Boone Counties, reported several power interruptions across its service area. On Monday, HEC reported 100 customers in Howard County were still without power. The company called in help from Boone and Macon Electric Cooperatives. As of Tuesday morning, power to all customers was reportedly restored.
