Workers for MECO Engineering and the city of Fayette put the finishing touches Thursday on sidewalk work around city hall on south Main Street. Replacement of sidewalks at a number of locations around the square is part of Fayette?s ongoing downtown revitalization project. (Several of the new retro-look street lamps may be seen here.) Recently, the lamps on the inside of the square were connected; the ones on the outside have been connected for several weeks.

City officials have announced that sidewalk work will begin Monday on the south side of the square (Morrison) and will be completed in spots, including in front of The Gazebo flower shop and in front of Merchants & Farmers Bank, as well as other locations. The bank?s drive-thru will be closed for 10 days and the flower shop will have restricted entrance for one day.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, work will take place on the west side of the square (Church Street), starting at the laundromat and working north.

Beginning Thursday, work will move to the north side of the square (Davis) and will flow from Church toward Main, with an expected completion by May 8.

On May 10, work should begin on the east side of the square (Main Street), starting north and progressing south. Completion is expected by May 15.

The schedule is based on weather permitting and no unforeseen developments, officials note.
