Owings inks letter of intent to become two-sport athlete at CMU

On Thursday, Fayette senior Theo Owings signed a letter of intent to become a two-sport athlete at Central Methodist University. Owings intends to play both golf and basketball.

“CMU is close to home,” said Owings. “I like being around my family, they help me in a lot of ways.”

Playing golf and basketball will not leave much spare time for Owings. “The golf season runs during September and October, then again March through May,” said CMU golf coach Stephen Mains. Basketball falls between those times.

“We’ve known Theo for a long time,” said CMU basketball coach Matt Sherman. ”He grew up going to our summer camps, lived in Columbia for awhile, then moved back here to Fayette. I think he has a lot of potential the more he plays and the more experience he gets. Anytime you can add a good person with skills is a good day for us.”

Mains said he is “super excited” to get a golfer from Fayette. “It will be up to Theo to see how hard he works to see where he falls on the roster.”

Sending a member of the golf team to the college level is a first for Garth Menees in four years of coaching the Fayette squad. “Theo is the first golfer I’ve had sign with anybody, so it’s really an exciting day and I wish him all the success going forward.”

Owings shot the low round of the year for Fayette and was also the medalist in two matches this season. Owings began this week at the state golf meet in Springfield, having qualified at districts last week. The state meet will wrap up on Tuesday, after The Advertiser goes to press.
