Plaque Dedicated Honoring Band Couple

Four Central Methodist Band Alumni were among those who joined Saturday afternoon to dedicate a new plaque for the Howard County Memorial Bandstand on the courthouse square.

Seen here temporarily affixed over the existing plaque, bronze plaque will ultimately be placed on the vertical front of the granite stone and will complement the first plaque, erected in 1971, which dedicated the then-new bandstand in memory of former Central band directors K.K. Anderson and Thomas Birch.

The new plaque honors the husband-wife team who served as CMC's joint band directors during the years 1964-66, Nancy and Ken Seward.

Spearheading the commemoration was longtime Fayette Star Cornet Band director Robert H. Bray, right. He was among those who played under the Sewards.

Joining with Bray from left (all members of the class of 1967): John Siebern, Houston, Tex.; Lisle Moore, Fulton; and Bob Hansen, Wentzville.

Following the dedication, the band ' directed by guest conductor Keith House ' played a concert in memory of the aforementioned Dr. Thomas Birch, Central's band director from 1952 to 1964.

The performance took place exactly 40 years to the day after Birch suffered a heart attack and died while conducting the band's annual spring home concert, May 1, 1964.
