Howard County Presiding Commissioner Lowell Eaton signs a proclamation Tuesday morning officially designating the week of May 3 through 7 as ?Missouri Juror Appreciation Week? in the county. Looking on at rear are 14th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Ralph Jaynes, center, Associate Circuit Court Judge Gary Sprick, right, and Circuit Clerk Charlie Joe Flaspohler. Seated with Eaton are Western District Associate Commissioner Howard Black, left, and Eastern District William (Benji) Conrow. A copy of the proclamation is reproduced in the print edition of this newspaper.

?The contribution of jurors to our courts is the bedrock of our legal system,? Jaynes said. ?Judge Sprick and I extend our thanks to the citizens of Howard County for their past and prospective jury service.?

Surveys indicate that more than half of all Missourians who are eligible have been called to jury duty. In 2003, about 124,000 citizens of the state reported to local courthouses after receiving a summons for jury service.
