Fayette will honor its veterans Friday.

Continuing a long-standing tradition, the Fayette American Legion and the Howard County DAR will join to sponsor the annual Veterans Day program starting at 10 a.m. in the Fayette High School gymnasium.

All members of the public, not just veterans, are encouraged to attend. FHS students and youngsters from Clark Middle School will be on hand.

Daly Elementary will hold its Veterans Day assembly at 8:30 a.m. Elder Richard Paige will speak at Daly.

The FHS event will honor all men and women who served in all conflicts and those in other wartime service.

Special recognition will be accorded those who are serving (or have served) in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Speaking will be well-known Fayette business leader Bruce Addison whose topic will be 'Why.' He is an army veteran who served both in Vietnam and Thailand.

Music at the ceremony will be provided by the FHS Chorus singing 'Song of the Unsung Hero.' Opening music will be performed by the Rev. Jamie Page. An FHS vocal ensemble will sing the National Anthem.

Master of ceremonies will be Gale Schafer, with words of welcome from school Superintendent Russ Brock and the pledge to the flag led by Legion Commander Leonard Young. Fayette Mayor Bill Fisher also will bring greetings.

Special observances during the program will include the Missing Man Ceremony and placing of a memorial wreath.

Legion officials scheduled to take part include Jim Losey, Commander Leonard Young, and Paul Kline.

DAR officials slated to take part include Louise Coutts and Gwen Wilder.

The Glasgow American Legion and VFW will present colors.

Formerly known as Armistice Day, Veterans Day now honors those who served in all wars. Originally it commemorated the end of World War I at 11 p.m. Nov. 11, 1918.
