The Boys & Girls Club in Fayette received a donation in the amount of $500 from Power Realty Group of Columbia.
The real estate agency makes two donations a year from monies held back from closings. For this donation, the decision as to what organization would receive the funds went to Wendy Sheehan, a local Fayette agent.
“I felt like since they were just getting rolling, that was one thing that stood out to me is that our gift might make a bigger punch,” Sheehan said, who, before her real estate career was a school teacher. “I know these children need support outside of a regular school day, and I appreciate what they do.”
The Boys and & Girls Club opened the Fayette site on March 12 and operates out of St. Paul United Methodist Church. After starting with 18 kids, that number blossomed into 48 kids throughout the summer. Children also enjoyed STEM activities. Central Methodist University offered up its indoor pool for the kids to use throughout the summer.
The Club also plans to host kids on Monday, when the Fayette School District is not in session, and afternoons until 6 p.m. on school days. Atwood said the Club will offer tutoring during the school year, as well as outdoor activities.
“We run programs for the kiddos during the school year, education, enrichment programs, tutoring, homework help and things like that,” said Atwood.
Since salaries are paid for through a grant, Atwood said the money donated from Power Realty Group would help purchase supplies for elementary-aged children and will help to keep the Club a free service for kids who reside inside the Fayette School District.
