Fayette freshman Rylan Roberts made history to lead the Lady Falcons to a share of third place in the State Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City.
The Fayette girls’ team finished with 37 points in Class 2, tying for third place with Grandview-R2 (Hillsboro) High School, led by Roberts’ remarkable weekend. The freshman medaled in all four of her events, highlighted by a new Class 2 state record in the triple jump. Her winning leap of 11.60 meters also snapped the school record dating back to 1980. She set the new record without even making her final two jumps because she had to be on the track for her race in the 400 meters.
Roberts also placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.46 seconds, fifth in the 200-meter dash in 25.17, and fifth in the 400-meter dash in 59.04.
Junior Browyn Eubanks also won multiple medals in the hurdles. She placed third overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.39 seconds after winning her prelim heat in 15.00. She then claimed fourth place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.41 seconds and tied for ninth in the high jump, clearing 1.50 meters.
Junior Payton Kindle added a seventh-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.60 seconds. She also competed in the 200-meter dash, where she placed 15th in prelims at 27.28 seconds.
Kindle also ran the third leg on Fayette’s 4x200-meter relay team, which placed eighth in Saturday’s finals in 1:49.17 after qualifying with a time of 1:47.57 in prelims on Friday. The team also included senior Hayden Sage, junior Chloe Bier, and sophomore Paige Vroman.
Vroman also competed individually in the 400-meter dash, finishing 11th in prelims at 1:00.63.
Fayette’s 4x100-meter relay team of Vroman, junior Mae Snyder, Kindle, and Bier finished 12th in prelims with a time of 52.00 seconds.
On the boys’ side, Fayette junior Carter Vroman earned two medals in the throws as the Falcons’ only state competitor. He placed third in the discus with a mark of 48.51 meters and fourth in the javelin at 51.16 meters.
Harrisburg had a strong showing from its boys’ team, led by a fourth-place finish in the Class 2 4x400-meter relay. Senior Trace Combs, junior Caleb Nichols, senior Isaac DeMuth, and senior Sam Katsaros clocked a time of 3:31.24 in the finals, improving on their eight-place qualifying time of 3:32.84 the day prior.
Individually, Combs placed seventh in the high jump, clearing 1.89 meters, while Katsaros finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.95 meters.
Harrisburg throwers Bender Wardrip and Jonathan Darwent, both juniors, each medaled in the shot put. Wardrip placed fifth with a throw of 15.98 meters, and Darwent finished seventh with a mark of 15.18 meters.
The Harrisburg girls were led by junior Poppy Spry, who cleared 3.09 meters to place fourth in the pole vault. Junior Bradey Simpson threw 36.83 meters to finish fourth in the discus. Sophomore distance runner Marie Bergfield placed 16th in both the 800-meter run (2:37.38) and the 1600-meter run (6:11.35).
In Class 1, New Franklin junior Lily Chitwood earned the girls’ team a medal with an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run. Her time of 2:27.25 also set a new school record.
“Lily is a phenomenal athlete, and after being injured most of last season, she came out this year with something to prove. It was great to see her end her season that way,” said New Franklin coach Adam Quest.
Senior Maddox Thornton added to the Bulldogs’ medal count with an eighth-place finish in the discus, throwing 41.88 meters.
“For the second year in a row, Maddox brought home a medal. Nobody has put in more time over the last two years than Maddox. Being a senior, I was so happy that he got to go out on the podium,” said Coach Quest. “We spent a lot of time this week trying to prepare both physically and mentally for the huge stage at the state meet, and they all delivered in a big way.
The New Franklin 4x800-meter relay team of freshman Quincy Dorson, freshman Noah Hackman, freshman Mason McGruder, and senior Xander McGruder finished 13th overall with a time of 9:05.17, setting a new school record for the third straight week.
Dorson also placed 16th in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:58.07 in his first state meet appearance.
“Being just a freshman, I know Quincy will use this experience to come back even stronger next season,” said Quest.
Junior Landon Shaw finished 11th in the triple jump with a leap of 12.41 meters. In the high jump, sophomore Rowan Lemberger tied for 12th with a clearance of 1.40 meters.
“Both exceeded their rankings coming in, and I was proud of how well they did,” said Quest.
