Schaefer will wrap up freshman season at state meet

Posted

On Saturday, Glasgow freshman KatiJo Schaefer was surprised by the difficulty of the cross country course at Linn High School.

She didn’t come close to her season-best time of 22:41, set nearly two weeks earlier in Salisbury, but she still placed in the top 10, qualifying for the Class 1 state championship race.

“I got up here and I thought ‘this isn’t bad, it’s pretty flat,” Schaefer said.

“Then right over there at the tree line, I was like ‘oh my gosh this is hilly!’ You had to fight for what you wanted.”

Schaefer finished eighth at the district meet with a time of 23:21. Times were slower for nearly every runner on the windy Saturday.

Schaefer said she was “nervous, very nervous,” during the race.

“Pretty good, just tired. I worked hard. I’m so excited that I made it this far. When I came into cross country, I did not expect to go to state, being a freshman.”

Tehya Sellmeyer was 24th with a time of 28:38 and Jamila White was 30th in 32:20. Brenna Hubbard finished 34th with a time of 36:04. Colton Sellmeyer finished his freshman season with a 20th place finish with a time of 22:04.
