Second-half mistakes hurt Glasgow in loss

The Lady Jackets cut a 16-point fourth quarter deficit to four points in the closing seconds, but couldn’t catch Sweet Springs in a 57-52 loss.

“I did like the fact that we battled back, but we just have to recognize that we have to battle the entire game,” Glasgow coach Molly Monnig said.

Malia Carmack

Malia Carmack scored 10 of her 18 points in the first half as Glasgow took a 23-20 lead into the half, but the third quarter was a disaster for Glasgow.

The Lady Greyhounds opened the second half with a 12-2 run aided by second-chance opportunities and turnovers.

“We go through some lulls where we just don’t play hard,” Monnig said.

“We gave up two missed box outs and had three turnovers, and all of a sudden your down 14 points instead of four. And those are just things that we have to fix.”

Carmack scored five in a row and brought the Lady Jackets within two points with a 3-point play, but Sweet Springs answered  with a 7-0 run. The Lady Greyhounds took a double-digit lead with a 3-pointer and beat the third quarter buzzer in transition to go up 49-35.

“They did hit some big shots, credit them,” Monnig said. “They play good defense and they make a lot of adjustments.

“But a lot of it was that we didn’t take care of the basketball. We had a lot of plays where we didn’t rebound the basketball.”

Brenna Hubbard and Hadley Sanders each scored 13 points.

The Lady Jackets drop to 6-8 for the season. Glasgow will face Pilot Grove in the consolation semifinal at 4:30 on Wednesday, Jan. 29. The Lady Tigers fell 62-31 to the top-seed Marshall earlier on Monday.
