Spilman banks 30 as Higbee girls trounce Bevier

Freshman Lauren Spilman led the Higbee Lady Tigers to an easy win for their season opener on Tuesday, 83-25, over Bevier.

Spilman’s white-hot shooting racked up 30 points. She finished 12-for-19 from the field and made four of 11 3-point tries. Defensively, she finished with a game-high eight assists and four rebounds.

Sophomore Ronnie Welch finished with a cool 22 points on 10-for-16 shooting from the field. She also made six assists and brought down five rebounds, four of which were on the offensive glass.

Junior Allie Mitchell rounded out Higbee’s double-digit scorers with 10 points. She also had five steals and five rebounds.

Higbee jumped way ahead early in a fast-paced opening quarter, leading 30-11 after eight minutes and 52-17 at halftime. The Lady Tigers allowed only eight points in the entire second half.

As a team, Higbee shot 63.8% from inside the arc and sank five of 13 shots from 3-point territory. The Lady Tigers scored 58 points in the paint, with 34 points scored in transition and 50 coming off of turnovers. 

Higbee outrebounded Bevier 31-20, with 19 rebounds off the offensive glass. The Tigers also scored 11 second-chance points.

The Lady Tigers return to the court on Monday as the second in the Northwestern Invitational at Mendon. They will take on seventh-seeded Hale in the opening round at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the championship bracket to face either third-seeded Lin Co., Brunswick, the sixth seed, at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
