The new splash park beside the Fayette City Pool should open by Memorial Day weekend. The city’s public works director, Danny Dougherty, reported to the city council on Tuesday, April 12, that the situation regarding the cement at the newly-constructed park will be resolved in time for the planned summer opening.
As was previously reported in the Fayette Advertiser, the concrete used to pour the pad of the new splash park contains lignite, a soft, brown sedimentary rock formed from naturally-compressed peat. When concrete containing lignite becomes wet, particles near the surface can expand and cause popouts, which was observed after the splash park was tested in September.
During the city council’s February 22 meeting, members voted unanimously to withhold payments owed to Ideal until the concrete is removed and a new splash pad is poured. The city owes about $107,000 on the $321,900 project, which was funded entirely through donations.
Ideal Landscaping designed the project and contracted with Columbia Ready Mix to provide the concrete. Eventually, the council voted to pay only $25,000 with the stipulation that the project is completed in a timely manner.
Dougherty said that Ideal Landscaping has agreed to have the splash park up and running by Memorial Day when the pool opens for the summer.
