Statements mailed taxes due by year s end

Two of life's certainties are said to be death and taxes, and for Howard County property owners the latter of the two is at hand.

County Collector Sharon Himmelberg reports that she is today mailing 2006 real estate and property tax statements, along with a statement of any delinquent taxes which may be due.

Himmelberg asks residents who may have bought, sold or own real estate or personal property not included on the tax statement to notify the courthouse as soon as possible.

Persons may submit this information either to the Collector's Office or the Assessor's Office, she said.

'Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve the taxpayer of his or her obligation to pay,' Himmelberg cautions. 'And, any delinquent tax must be paid prior to current taxes.'

Payments may be made in the Collector's Office in person or by mail. A paid receipt will be sent via return mail.

Again this year the office will accept electronic check payments and credit card payments, Himmelberg adds. The county utilizes a company known as Official Payments as its service provider for electronic payments.

Inserts sent with tax statements describe this service. This permits paying on-line or by telephone. However, there will be a convenience fee charged, she noted.

A number of counties now are offering this new service. Himmelberg explained that neither the county nor the county collector's office derives any monetary benefit from this convenience.

Himmelberg also reports that Howard County now is among counties in the state which has simplified the motor vehicle registration process. The Collector's Office here now provides the Department of Revenue with all paid 2004, 2005 and 2006 paid personal property data. 'It's still a good idea to take your paid receipt(s) to the license office,' she said. All Missouri motor vehicle license offices, including the local office here in the Commercial Trust building, have access to Howard County information.

Himmelberg's office this year is charged with collecting nearly $5.8 million in taxes. This includes $3,418,945 in real estate taxes, $1,314,447 in personal property taxes, $75,640 for special levee and drainage districts, and $987,490 in state and local assessments (real estate and personal property) for railroads and utilities.

The cities of Fayette, Armstrong, New Franklin and Franklin are included on the county tax statements. Glasgow city taxes are mailed separately from the Glasgow city collector's office.

Himmelberg invites area residents with questions to call or stop by her office in the courthouse. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., including the noon hour.

The courthouse will be closed Nov. 23 and 24 for Thanksgiving and from noon Dec. 22 through Dec. 25.

The collector's office will be open Saturday morning, Dec. 30, until noon for the convenience of those paying at the last minute.

This is the last day to pay taxes without penalty.

Taxes which are mailed must be postmarked in December. Any taxes postmarked in January will be returned unless penalties are included.

Questions' Call the collector at 248-2195 or the assessor at 248-3400.
