Steve Koirtyohann, 69, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away on April 29, 2025, in Columbia. He was born on October 12, 1955. Steve left behind a legacy of service, love, and unwavering dedication to his family, friends, and community.
A proud graduate of the University of Missouri with a degree in business, Steve chose to follow his heart early in life. After facing his first battle with cancer as a newlywed, he made the decision to pursue a career he truly loved—construction. Over the years, Steve brought countless projects to life with skill and passion. His work spanned from Habitat for Humanity homes and custom residences to horse barns, restaurants, downtown apartments, mission trips, and more. Each project bore the mark of his craftsmanship and care.
Steve was deeply committed to helping others. For over four decades, he was a faithful member and leader at Red Top Christian Church. He loved the kids in the church especially and was always being ornery with them. Often times getting them in trouble with their parents and then snickering about it. His faith guided him not only in worship but also in action. In recent years, he found great fulfillment volunteering with Global First Responders (GFR), contributing his construction expertise to communities around the world facing urgent needs.
His dedication extended into civic life as well. Steve served on the Hallsville School Board for 16 years and was an active supporter of Hallsville 4-H. He also contributed his time and insight as a member of the Boone County Planning and Zoning Committee.
One of Steve’s greatest passions was rugby—a sport that shaped much of his adult life. In 1979, he helped found the Columbia Outlaws Rugby Club and proudly played rugby for six decades. Through rugby, Steve built lasting friendships across the United States and internationally. The camaraderie he shared with fellow players formed a brotherhood that endured through time and distance.
Steve’s warmth and generosity were evident in every aspect of his life. He was known for checking in on friends regularly—whether through phone calls or shared meals—and always stepping up when someone needed help. He was a devoted father, son, uncle, brother, friend, and husband—a truly great human being whose presence enriched countless lives.
Traveling brought Steve immense joy. He shared many memorable adventures with Julie and Edward—from annual winter escapes to Florida to unforgettable journeys across New Zealand.
He is survived by his beloved wife Julie (Forderhase); their son Edward; his mother Laura; sisters Linda and Carrie; nephew Morgan Forderhase (Liz); niece Emma Ploof (Cory); and great-nephew and niece Landon Ploof and Sutton Ploof—whom he lovingly referred to as his favorites.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, S Roy Koirtyohann.
