Teen entrepreneurs start yard sign business

Posted

Two Fayette siblings have entered the world of entrepreneurship with a yard sign business that provides 24-hour placement of celebration yard art in Fayette and the surrounding communities.

Theo Owings, a senior at Fayette High School, and Ella Owings, a sophomore at FHS, took on their business Yard Love by Blitz Signs (an affiliate business license of Yard Love, Inc.) in part as a way to attain and hone business skills, and in part to do work they could fit in around schedules full with school, sports, and church activities.

This has turned out to be more challenging than the teens expected, according to Theo. With the tight turnaround and the need to physically install and take down signs in yards throughout the area, it’s often tricky “finding time to get the signs out with our schedules,” he said.

Luckily, having a sibling involved in the business means they can tag team when one has another commitment.

In addition to being an opportunity to develop new skills, the teens say the business has been fun. For Ella, the project is a creative outlet, too. “It’s fun being able to design [the signs] and then go to put them up,” she said.

The project also gives the young entrepreneurs a chance to give back to the community. Customers have the opportunity to choose to donate 10 percent of their rental fee to their local athletic booster club.

The teens can design signs to mark all sorts of occasions, from birthdays to anniversaries or homecoming celebrations. They have a website at www.blitzayard.com and are on Facebook and Instagram as well.
