Men's soccer starts 2-0

The defending two-time national champions opened the 2020 season with a pair of wins; defeating Benedictine 4-0 on the road Wednesday and holding off Graceland 3-2 at home on Saturday.

CMU took a 2-0 lead over Graceland with goals from Christian Sanchez Ortiz and Tom Irion after a scoreless first half. The Yellowjackets pulled within a goal, but Carlos Scheckermann scored on a header in the 81st minute to restore the two-goal lead. Marcos German had two assists.

Mark Csongradi was named conference men’s soccer player of the week for his three-goal performance in the Eagles’ season opener at Benedictine. Csongradi and Scheckermann each scored in a 63-second span as the first half ended to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Benedictine was limited to one shot on goal. The Eagles have outshot their opponents 39-7 over the first two games.

Football shuts out Graceland

Central Methodist’s second offensive play of the season was a 42-yard pass from Jalen Brown to Kristopher Williams during a six-play 70-yard touchdown drive.

The Eagles’ second defensive play was a 30-yard interception return by Mar’Quess Daniels, which put CMU up 14-0 less than four minutes into the first game of the season.

The Eagles scored four touchdowns in the first quarter on the way to a 42-0 win over Graceland in Lamoni, Iowa on Saturday.

In the first quarter, Brown completed 8 of 10 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns, both caught by Katavious Taylor.

Less than two minutes went off the clock between the 38-yard and 39-yard touchdowns caught by Taylor. An Anthony Johnson interception set up the fourth score of the quarter.

Brown finished with 276 passing yards and also had a rushing score. Shawn Simmons carried the ball 20 times for 127 yards and a touchdown. Taylor finished with 103 receiving yards. Kooper Wilson caught seven balls for 62 yards. Carelle Hill caught three passes for 41 yards.

Brandon Molinari and Erik Mays each intercepted a pass and Khari Henley scored on a 92-yard fumble return.

Daniels, who had a pick-six in last year’s season opener as well, led the CMU defense with seven tackles and a sack. He was named conference defensive player of the week. Will Miles had a sack and two tackles for loss.

Contreras leads Eagle golfers at MVC Invitational

After a 40-month hiatus, the Central Methodist golf teams were back in action on Monday and Tuesday at the MVC Invitational in Marshall.

Eagle freshman Cassandra Contreras finished fifth out of 30 individuals, shooting rounds of 84 and 80 (164) at the Indian Foothills Golf Course.

“Contreras had a great start in her first tournament, she had to deal with some adversity in her second round but overcame that with great maturity,” CMU head golf coach Stephen Main said.

Contreras was named the conference women’s golfer of the week.

“Contreras is an all-round strong golfer,” Main said. “She is one of the hardest workers I have met. Her ball striking and accuracy is a joy to watch, she has so much potential to go far in college golf.”

Bailey Stefanski was 11th with scores of 91 and 87 (178). The Eagle women finished fourth out of six teams. The Central Methodist men finished third out of ten teams. The CMU reserve squad was eighth.

“Collectively, as a group we felt our performances could have been better, but we were very competitive right out the blocks which was one of our main goals for the season,” Main said. “We have an incredibly young, talented group here which makes the future extremely exciting.”

Matias Baccola tied for sixth out of 50 individuals with rounds of 76, 70, and 71 for a total of 217. Aaron Teece finished 18th with a three-round total of 226.

CMU dropped the season opener at No. 23 Benedictine 3-2 on Wednesday.

The Ravens took the lead in the ninth minute and led the rest of the way despite putting just five shots on goal in the game. The Eagles outshot Benedictine 18-6 and put eight on goal, but came up one goal short.

CMU Freshman Sandra Jakobsen cut into the 2-0 lead with a deflected shot from the top of the box in the 27th minute.

It was the fifth straight game between CMU and Benedictine that was decided by a single goal with the home team winning each contest.
