The week in Central Methodist athletics

No. 1 men's soccer team stays undefeated

The top-ranked Central Methodist men’s soccer team stayed unbeaten with wins over Evangel and William Penn. The Eagles have not allowed a goal in the month of October, outscoring opponents 22-0 over the four-game stretch.

Five players have at least three goals for Central Methodist just six games into the season. Freshmen Tom Irion and Isaac Johnson each scored their third of the season during a 3-0 win over William Penn on Saturday. Sophomore Christian Sanchez, who leads the Eagles with 12 shots on goal this season, scored his fourth of the year.

Eagle senior Guzman Pery had a goal and an assist during CMU’s 9-0 win over Evangel on Wednesday. It was the third assist and first goal of the season for Pery, who played all 90 minutes on senior night. Fellow senior Johnny Gibula also scored his first goal of the season, and senior Harry Porritt needed just one save in the goal to preserve the shutout.

Billy Nzojyibwami scored twice and is tied with Sanchez and Mark Csongradi with a team-leading four goals for the season. Carlos Scheckermann scored his third of the season in the blowout win.

Women’s Soccer wins two

The CMU women’s soccer team had its third straight shutout win, 7-0 over William Penn on Saturday.

Central Methodist scored four goals in the first half. Sandra Jakobsen scored twice, while Anika Kallash and Elly Boothe each had a goal and two assists. Maria Cervello had a goal and an assist. CMU outshot William Penn 26-1 and did not allow a shot on goal.

Jakobsen also had a pair of goals in a 6-0 win over Evangel on Wednesday. Kallash had a goal and two assists. Andrea Villar assisted on two goals.

Jakobsen leads the Eagles with six goals for the season, Kallash has five goals and a team-high six assists.

Football falls to Benedictine

Central Methodist kept the Benedictine offense out of the endzone after the Ravens scored on the first two possessions of the game, but the Eagle offense was unable to get anything going in a 16-0 loss on Saturday.

A blocked punt put the Eagles in position to cut the 14-0 lead in half in the first quarter. The Central Methodist drive started at the four-yard line, but the Eagles gained just one yard on three plays and then missed a 20-yard field goal.

Two plays later, CMU got the ball back just 22 yards from the endzone on Brice Walker’s fumble recovery, but an interception on third down ended that scoring chance.

The Eagles also forced a fumble on Benedictine’s first possession of the second half, but gave it back on the next play with another pick.

The Eagle quarterback was sacked eight times for losses of 56 yards and CMU finished with 12 total rushing yards.

The Ravens moved the ball 111 yards on the first two drives of the game and finished with just 186 yards of offense to the Eagles’ 120.

Will Miles had eight tackles including three for loss and one sack. Mar’quess Daniels led the defense with 12 tackles. Brandon Molinari and Colton Skyles each had a fumble recovery in the loss.

The Eagles are 3-3 after dropping three of the last four games. CMU will be on the road for the next two games at Baker and Evangel.

Sauter finishes second

Eagle senior Lisa Sauter finished second in the Columbia College XC Invite at the Gans Creek Course in Columbia on Friday, leading the Eagle women to a second-place finish out of three teams. Sauter finished the 5K course in 19:28, just four seconds behind sophomore Jada O’Donnell from Columbia.

Radovan Kemboi led the Eagle men with a third-place finish and an 8K time of 26:17. The Eagle men finished third out of four full teams. Former Glasgow standout Zy’Shonne Cowans was 10th out of 39 with a time of 29:28 for the Eagles and CMU freshman Tyler Perkins (of New Franklin) finished 29th in 30:50.
