The race for Western District Commissioner for Howard County is heating up. A third man has now thrown his hat into the ring. Mike Vroman, from Armstrong, announced his candidacy last week. He joins former Howard County Sheriff Charlie Polson, a fellow Democrat, and Mat Freese, a Republican.
Current commissioner Howard McMillan will not seek re-election. Vroman and Polson will face off in the democratic primary in August.
Filing opened for county offices on Tuesday. Candidates may file for office at the Howard County Clerk’s office in the courthouse until 5 p.m. March 31.
Vroman is a third-generation farmer and lifelong Howard County resident. He and his wife of 46 years, Marilyn, have five children, all whom continue to reside in this county. They also have 12 grandchildren.
Vroman said in a press release that being a member of the Armstrong Special Road District for three decades gives him the understanding the of the importance of road maintenance to ensure the safety of our communities. “For over 25 years I have dedicated my services to the Armstrong Fire Department and also assisted in the establishment of the Fire Protection District,” the release read. “Previously, I managed the Howard County Keller Building where I developed a close working relationship with employees and together we made sure everyday operations were achieved.”
Currently, Vroman is employed by the Howard County Road and Bridge Department, which maintains roads and bridges of the surrounding communities.
“It would be an honor to be elected as western district commissioner of Howard County,” Vroman said in the press release. “I will dedicate my time and listen to the needs of our community to solve issues that impact Howard County. My extensive background with roads, trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment will be a tremendous asset to county departments and divisions.”
Vroman said he would like to promote more business in the county, as western district commissioner. By working together, he said, we can make improvements and continue growth in the surrounding communities.
