Several downtown businesses are getting into the holiday spirit this year, with plans and events scheduled for Small Business Saturday on November 26.
First observed in the United States on November 27, 2010, Small Business Saturday was developed by American Express as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores, respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local.
Kicking things off Saturday will be the second annual Turkey Trot, presented by Fayette Main Street, Inc. The 5k is a great way to run, walk, or pedal off some of the extra pounds from Thanksgiving. Registration for the fun race begins at 8:30 a.m. with the race starting at 9 a.m.
The starting and finishing line will be in front of Tricky Fish Community Room at 114 S Main St. in Fayette.
Several downtown retail locations will be ready for Small Business Saturday shoppers. Sheep Dog Creations will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a special appearance by Santa Claus from 9 until 10:30 a.m.
Gold Apple Boutique will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., and Paisley BowTique will open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Blessed Nest will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., and The Attic will be open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Whispers for Hope Gallery will hold a drawing for a newly-created painting by artist and gallery owner Amy Dawkins.
For those needing some extra fuel before shopping, downtown restaurants will be open for breakfast. Remedy IV will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Miknan’s Main Street Pub will open for breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m., and Fayette’s favorite coffee shop, Fireside Bakes and Brews, will be open from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Emmet’s Kitchen & Tap will be open regular hours from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m.
All of these businesses are locally owned and operated.
Shoppers will receive a raffle ticket when making purchases at each business. A drawing for a “Locals” gift basket, valued at more than $200, will be held on Tuesday, November 29.
