Two area men charged for alleged assault in April

Two Howard County men are facing felony assault charges after it was alleged they ran a vehicle off the road and assaulted the driver and one occupant in early April. Denver Nation-Copeland, 22 of Armstrong, and Dalton Barney, 19 of Glasgow, were arrested Wednesday, May 6.

According to a probable cause statement filed by the Howard County Sheriff’s Department, Lukas Hubbard was the driver of a vehicle with four other occupants that was forced off of the roadway on County Road 237 by a vehicle occupied by Barney and Nation-Copeland on April 4. The two men then turned around and followed the vehicle driven by Hubbard, flashing its lights.

Hubbard stopped his vehicle and rolled down the driver’s side window. That’s when Barney punched him twice with a closed fist, according to the report.

Hubbard’s girlfriend, who’s name was redacted from the report, told police that she got out of the vehicle and told the two men to stop. She said that she slapped Nation, then he grabbed her throat and threw her to the ground. She said that Nation scratched her left eye and when she stood up he hit her on the thigh.

Nation-Copeland and Barney are each charged with one count of third-degree assault, a Class E felony. Barney posted a $5,000 bond May 11 and was released. He is scheduled for arraignment in Howard County court on June 23.

Nation-Copeland’s motion for a reduction of his $10,000 cash-only bond was denied and he was ordered to serve Court-Ordered Detention Sanction (CODS), which is 120 days shock prison incarceration or drug treatment.

In March he was sentenced 60 days in jail when his probation was revoked following his third guilty plea for marijuana possession since 2018. Also in March he was put on five years probation for felony drug possession, other than marijuana. He is scheduled to be back in Howard County court September 15 for a bond reduction hearing.
