Although only 12, two veteran wrestlers from the area will be competing for state titles this weekend at the HyVee Arena in Kansas City. Formerly known as Kemper Arena, it will play host this weekend to wrestlers from all over the state as they compete to win titles in the Missouri USA Wrestling 2020-21 State Folkstyle Championship.
At 12-years of age, it seems strange to call Athan Briggs and Shane Oswald “veterans.” But with Athan and Shane both having eight years of wrestling under their belts they seem deserving of the title.
Athan began wrestling when he was five and currently wrestles with the Boonville wrestling club coached by Joey Bishop, Tyler Schanzmeyer, Josh Keys, and his dad, James Briggs. Athan will be competing in the 12-and-under, 70-pound weight class. “My favorite thing about wrestling is the friends I can make,” said Briggs.
This was the first year Athan has won a tournament and managed to win two. This will be his first year competing in the state tournament.
Athans attends Clark
Middle School and his parents are James and Shannon Briggs of Fayette.
Shane began wrestling at age five as well. He wrestled with the Boonville YMCA Wrestling Club for three years then moved to the Eierman Elite Wrestling Club in Millersburg where he is coached by Mike Eierman, Tony Eierman, and Matt Seechuck.
Shane wrestles in the 12-and-under group as well but in the 105-pound weight class.
“I like wrestling because it really makes you put in a lot of work and effort,” Shane said. “I also like it because it is only you and your opponent in the match so you are in control of what happens.”
Shane attends Smithton Middle School in Columbia. His parents are Jeff and Sonya Oswald of Fayette and Tricia Oswald of Columbia.
The arena will be hosting one session Friday evening along with two sessions on Saturday, and two on Sunday. Each session will have more than 200 wrestlers competing on two separate levels of the arena. Over the weekend, there will be 1,000-1,500 wrestlers competing.
