UPDATE: Suspect in Franklin has been apprehended by law enforcement

Posted

One woman is dead and a 44-year-old has been apprehended for his suspected role a homicide in Franklin on Monday. Emmett Wood, Jr., of Franklin was taken into custody Tuesday morning.

Howard County Sheriff Mike Neal said the 911 call from the suspect’s father was made shortly before 5 p.m. Monday. According to a probable cause statement filed by Howard County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Sellars, Emmett Wood, Sr. told the 911 operator that there was an unknown female that was bleeding at his residence.

According to the statement, Woods, Sr. told police that he observed his son and an unknown white female physically fighting in the residence. He said the female was trying to leave the house when Wood, Jr., pulled her back into the residence. At some point during the struggle, the victim hit her head on the fireplace. According to the statement, Wood Jr. told his father, “let her die she’s a cop.” Wood Jr., then left the residence on foot and remains at large.

Officers arrived at the home on Crews St. in Franklin where they found Courtney Clardy, 22, dead with multiple stab wounds. A manhunt for Wood, Jr. is ongoing.

Sheriff Neal said Clardy was killed with a bladed weapon, which has not been found. She was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be performed in Boone County.

Wood is on the run and is considered armed and dangerous. He is described as a white male, 5-feet 8-inches tall, approximately 150 pounds, with a bald head, and several tattoos.

Sheriff Neal called in aid from the Mid-Missouri Major Case Squad. A Missouri State Highway Patrol helicopter was deployed but the suspect was not located. Crime scene detectives have processed the scene, Neal said.

A no-bond warrant has been issued for Wood, Jr. He is being sought for second-degree murder, a Class A felony. Online court records state the “Court finds that the Defendant poses a substantial danger to the safety of the community.”

Sheriff Neal said Wood is the only suspect in the alleged murder. “We know who our suspect is. It’s a matter of getting him located and captured.”

Wood is a native of Howard County. Most recently he was sentenced in February 2017 to three to six years in prison in Nebraska following a car crash that left his passenger dead.
